Chapter 10: Buildings and Books

Status in 1951, part 2

The University of British Columbia’s earliest law library was housed in an army hut. Although this provided reasonably comfortable quarters, army huts did not provide secure storage for a collection of rapidly growing value. They had a life expectancy of only 20 minutes after a fire began.

The University of British Columbia’s 1951 law library was carefully designed to provide storage space for books and a pleasant work space for students. It was also convertible, as occasion demanded, to a large hall suited for moot courts and other public occasions, as shown in the cover illustration.
